What is Echinacea?

Echinacea, commonly called coneflower, is a medicinal plant belonging to the Asteracae or daisy family. It is commonly used to treat and prevent the cold and flu, but has also proven effected in reducing the recurrence of vaginal yeast infections.

Properties of Echinacea

Echinacea contain a great variety of complex compounds. Alkylamide, phenol, and polysaccharide compounds within the plant act as the active ingredients by stimulating the immune system.

How to Use Echinacea

Tea can be made from the dried roots and leaves of the plant. Drinking the tea during cold or flu can ease symptoms and help you recover quicker.

A paste can be formed by crushing up the plant and root in a mortar. This paste is then applied to the skin.

Supplements containing Echinacea extract as well as creams made from the plant are also available to purchase.

Side Effects of Echinacea

There are no known side effects, but if you notice a reaction while taking it, stop immediately.
