What is Amoxicillin (Amoxil)?

Amoxicillin is a broad range β-lactam antibiotic. It targets a wide range of bacteria including gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. The name is sometimes abbreviated to amox, and it is sold under many different trade names such as Amoxil.

Prescribed Use of Amoxicillin (Amoxil)

Amoxicillin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections:

  • Infections of the middle ear, nose and throat
  • Infections of the tonsils, throat, and larynx (laryngitis)
  • Infections of the bronchi (bronchitis) and lungs (pneumonia)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Infections of the skin
  • Gonorrhea

    Although usually covered by your insurance, the price of amoxicillin can range from 20 cents to $1.50 per pill, depending on the dose and quantity purchased.

    Side Effects of Amoxicillin (Amoxil)

    A severe allergic reaction is the most dangerous side effect of this drug. Contact a doctor immediately if you experience the following:

  • Rash, itching, redness, and inflammation on your skin
  • Sores inside your mouth
  • Tingling, numbness, pain, and weakness
  • Swelling of the respiratory passages and difficulty breathing
  • Being prone to bruising and bleeding
  • Yellowing of the skin, eyes, and dark colored urine
  • Less dangerous side effects include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain
  • Headaches
  • Swollen, dark or hairy looking tongue
  • Vaginal Itching and discharge
  • Amoxicillin Drug Interactions

    Be careful what you take Amoxicillin with, because it may have adverse interactions with the following:

  • Anticoagulants
  • Allopurinol
  • Birth control pills
  • Other antibiotics
  • Cancer treatments
  • Uricosuric drugs
