Retin A

Retin A unclogs pores and causes the skin to peel, or shed skin cells. Although Retin A is a very effective treatment for fine wrinkles it is not recommended for deep wrinkles. Retin A is also used to treat severe acne. Retin A comes in many forms such as creams gels and lotions. Each form is just as effective as the other. Some side effects that may occur during use are blistering, burning or excessive dryness, redness and in rare cases swelling.

Some people can have an allergic reaction to Retin A. If you have hives or severe swelling after using this product contact your doctor as soon as possible. As with any other product an allergic reaction can be very serious and should be dealt with immediately. If you experience any of the symptoms and you are overly concerned, stop using product and contact your doctor as soon as possible to discuss the problem.

While using this product you can expect to feel a warm feeling to your skin as well as slight stinging. You will notice some peeling as some skin cells are shed. Always be sure to use a sun block while you are using Retin A as you may be much more sensitive to the sun’s rays. The effects of using Retin A during pregnancy is not known. Some studies suggest that there may be a risk of birth defects in women who use this treatment during pregnancy.

If you are pregnant it is always a good idea to discuss with your doctor any medications that you are using to determine the risks to your unborn baby. If you plan on breast feeding your baby while using Retin A, you should discuss this with your doctor. Some medications can pass into the breast milk. Perhaps your doctor can offer an alternative treatment that you are more comfortable with until you have finished nursing your baby.

Alpha Hydroxy

Alpha hydroxy actually helps skin produce collagen therefore making skin thicker. Since alpha hydroxy acids come from such things as fruit and sugar cane they are considered a natural skin treatment. Start with a product that has an acid level of no more than ten percent. If you are not completely satisfied with the results and think you want to increase the acid level you should discuss this with your physician.

It is better to have the advice of a professional than to risk damage to your skin which can be very serious. If you have tried Retin A and stopped using it because it was too irritating, alpha hydroxy may work better for you since it is less irritating to sensitive skin. You may also notice that alpha hydroxy does not dry your skin out like Retin A does. Always follow the directions on the label when using Retin A or alpha hydroxy products. Using them more often than directed will not give you quicker or better results.
